#CHURCH

Aaaaand we're late...smh

Ended up being only 20ish minutes late.

Sermon Topic: "God's Word Is More Than Enough" (Luke 1: 5-20)

Minister Nicky Byrd preaching today. {WHO RUN THE WORLD?! GIRLS! lol}

I presume Pastor J is out of town. Boooo. SN: All of his subs are always awesome though. No worries.

OMG Excerpt: "Are you mentally prepared to receive the blessings you've been praying for?"

- Do you REALLY know why you want a miracle?

- Miracles come with assignments attached to them.

- God will not bring a blessing to you if He can't send a blessing THROUGH you!

- Live a life on-call for God. Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes (Luke 1:6)

- Prepare for the position. Prepare for the baby. Prepare for the blessing. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.

Saturday

Chillin...

Jaz and I climbed in my bed and talked as I crocheted and she held the skein of yarn. Whenever I said 'pull', she'd pull a foot of yarn out. Her idea. Not mine. It was cute. Oh, I got this yarn at Walmart for like 96 cents last year. I think it was supposed to be autumn colors but something went terribly awry in the dye process...lol

Dreadlocks {locs/dreads}

Locs are matted coils of hair.

Etymologically, the term 'dreadlocks' is derived from two commonly utilized origins.

1) Around the 60's (I think) dreadlocks were viewed as dreadful. So unclean, so unkempt, so de clase. In other words, dreadful locks of hair.

2) In Jamaica (Rastafarianism), dreadlocks referred to a life of "dread of Jah" (fear of the Lord - which 97% of Christians practice today, by the way.)

Disclaimer: I'm recalling this from memory. No need to scoff at any historical errors. Just a rough summarization.

A question I'm asked most often? Why would I want dreads?

Answer: I like how they look and I live a lifestyle of simplicity. No need to sit in a beauty salon all day and SCARE my hair into being bone straight with hazardous chemicals. Mind you, I used to get relaxers (commonly referred to as perms but they straighten your hair) every 4-6 weeks. At around $80/visit, it adds up! But to each our own.

DISCLAIMER #2: I *still* visit a natural hair salon (no heat, no relaxers, only organic products) every 6 weeks and I pay about the same. I go to Uncle Funky's Daughter (UFD) in Houston. www.unclefunkysdaughter.com Please delight yourself and visit their website. I love love love the salon AND the boutique!

DISCLAIMER #3: I visit UFD every 6 weeks to make sure my hair is presentable at work. Locs are still very much stigmatized so if I'm gonna have em, I have to come correct and look professional. RANT: I despise having to religiously maintain my 'ethnic hairstyle' to satiate popular opinion. But I do need a job so I do what I gotta do.

I'm sure this'll be THE longest post in the history of posts...lol

I started my loc journey on March 5, 2011...with a big ol fro.
The big ol fro...

Went to an African Braiding Salon in the heart of the ghetto. First mistake.

My hair was twisted into comb coils using mousse and honey. Yes, I'm serious. #FAIL So I continued going there for the next few months til I decided I'd be more comfortable paying almost twice at a critically acclaimed PROFESSIONAL salon.
The finished product after the first visit to the seedy shop...

First visit at Uncle Funky's was July 1, 2011 and I haven't looked back since! Yay! My loctician (beautician who does locs) just so happens to co-own Uncle Funky's with her husband. The Reed's are probably the funkiest folks you'll ever meet :-)

Alas, pictures!
First visit to Uncle Funky's!

Loctician told me I could braid 'em and they'd be crinkly. It worked! :-)
Pinned it up after I braided it. Was quite pleased.
Taken a few minutes ago.
I'd say I'm about 60% locked (almost 60% matted)
A lot of new growth.
Don't judge me...my appointment is on Thursday...lol

Miracles & Blessings

So we got to Denny's. Gave Samantha (best.waitress.ever) her Santa mug filled with candy (Walmart makes gift giving lovely!). She loved it and said it made her day! :-) Seriously, we go every Saturday so the hostess already knows to seat us in Sam's section. lol

Anyway, we were seated next to an older couple and I heard her mentioning crochet night at the public library. WHAT?!? WHAT?!? WHAT?!?

So I asked her to excuse me for eavesdropping and inquired about crochet night. This turned into a 20 minute convo about crocheting and her showing pictures of hats she crocheted for her granddaughters and her husband proudly talking about his granddaughter's MAD skills in volleyball and telling us where to go to see the coolest Christmas lights! Then they told us about their church and the hayrides they're having tomorrow and Jaz was suuuuper excited about that! And I'm suuuuuper excited about the weekly crochet meetings!

Best Saturday Morning. EVER.

Peggy & Dennis...y'all are beyond awesome!!!!

*I've included a picture of my MAD knitting skills SON {smirk}* lol

Pensive...

Woke up in the foulest of foul moods. Gotta shake it off. Think we'll continue our Saturday morning tradition and visit this chic boutique breakfast spot. I believe the underground term for it is 'Dennys'. lol

Friday

Parents Night Out: Update

30 minutes after I picked her up:

Wash face paint off. Check.

Shower. Check.

"You want a massage with the bedtime lotion? (s/o to Johnson's Lavender Bedtime Lotion!)"

"Yes, ma'am."

We are a well-oiled machine around these parts! ;-)

Parents Night Out

I'm such a punk. I watched the clock the entire time and caved at 9:00 PM. Mind you, I paid for her to be there til 9:30. Lo and behold, these pictures (9:10) best summarize her adventure.
